YAY! Guess whose mom is coming??
MINE!!
And when is she coming??
TOMORROW!!
We are so excited to have her here.
Plus I need a few new things. :)
(jk dad, we'll try to be good)
So does anyone else go into like hyper-active-super-ultra-high-strung-mega-lightning-cleaning babe when their mother is coming to stay? It's so ridiculous. I know my mom doesn't care if there is dust on the baseboards. PLUS, a big note to everyone out there....I don't know what you mop with but I bought some lysol at the $store and it's supposed to smell like lavender. I mopped my kitchen and bathroom with it and now my house smells like a huge ol' port-a-pooper. Definitely not lavender. (and i think i'm allergic to the smell. My sinuses are going bonkers).
Anyway, a few things on the menu are:
1) Disneyland for Spencer's birthday (Spencer 2.9 is about to be upgraded to Spencer 3.0 Yikes! Time for a trade in?? :o)
2) Wild Animal Park
3) Playing with kids
4) More playing with kids
5) Lunch? (I don't remember the last time I went out for lunch. Probably the last time Mom was here)
I'm so spoiled.
I love Mom.

a little hard-headed
i started out the day grumbling and cranky.
i had committed the day before to sing a solo at a funeral and really REALLY did not want to do it.
i was cold and shaky and couldn't eat a thing.
i was irratable and vowed to never do it again.
i cursed every person i asked to sing with me that couldn't.
i tried to think of every possible way of getting out of it without blatantly lying.
but there was no way around it.
the funeral was nice.
half-way through it i got so involved i forgot i was singing.
then i remembered
and
i thought i was going to dry-heave.
the song went really well.
the Spirit was strong.
everyone liked it.
i could see that the family was so grateful.
it was so rewarding
and....
i may end up doing it again.
THEN
i got to come home and floated around the kitchen for a bit and made some of my favorites.
Cranberry salsa I have been craving since the last time i made it at x-mas.
Healthy banana bran muffins- this was a new recipe. no fat. no sugar. not a lot of flavor (i should have let my bananas ripen more). but i still enjoy them because they are healthy.
And i can't say i made these but MMMMMMMmmmmmmm....they taste better than they look, even. SOOOOO sweet and de-lish. (these were from tu madre, Shandee! I think i'll substitue sharing time for her more often)
i got to end the day with a long run and a delicious taco salad.
so maybe i need to sacrifice and serve a little more often.
and a little more willingly.
What blessings have you received from your sacrifice lately???

The Irreplaceable Employee
A conversation I had with the shoe sales-guy yesterday in Famous Footwear:
"Hi, can I help you with something?"
"Sure. What are the main differences between Asics and Nikes?"
"Well, as you can see, we have more of a variety of Nikes. It really just depends on which one you like more. Some people prefer the Asics and some people prefer the Nikes."
"OH! NOW I SEE! Thank you. That would have taken a lot of effort to pull that answer out of my own butt."

Dear Children,
I'm just gonna get it out in the open.
There may be a few pictures which may embarrass you when you get older.
Every kid has them and every parent loves them.
Yes, I will use them and hold them against you if needed.
Yes, your friends and girlfriends may see them and laugh at you.
It doesn't mean that I still don't love you.
But sometimes there are........measures......which have to be taken to keep your behavior in line.
Here's just a small taste of what I've got: (I have more where there aren't so many convenient toys)
(Yes, Nolan that is you on the left.........................wait.....)
Try me.
Love,
Mom

Who's on the Lord's side, Who?
Yeah, you thought I was done with this, didn't you?
Next thing you know I'll be blogging about our garden again.
Those of you who follow my blog know we were highly involved in the passing of Proposition 8 this last November. I recently had a long discussion with my brother, Wes, about the whole thing which caused me to revisit the whole experience and feelings associated with it. For those of you who live out of California, you may not understand the scope of the whole thing. Allow me to open your eyes...
Proposition 8 came about because last May, 4 corrupt judges in San Fransisco overturned a previous vote which defined marraige as between one man and one woman. These judges decided that it was unconstitutional to prevent gays from getting married. So they allowed it to happen. Between May and November 2008, 18,000 gay couples were married.
The work that was put into the passing of Proposition 8 cannot be understood by anyone who wasn't a part of it. Our church is normally not involved in politics AT ALL. But this was different. This was an attack on the family. Members in each ward were assigned to head up the project in their ward. Call centers were set up; lists of numbers given out; donations, large and small were made; a broadcast from Salt Lake was held for all members; signs were made and held up on street corners; Saturdays were spent educating those who didn't know about the Proposition about the consequences of it passing or not; flyers were put on anything that would stand still...and so much more that I'm not aware of. From my point it felt like the world was either standing on one side or the other and each person had really strong feelings about the side they were on.
Why did this mean so much to me? It hit close to home. Literally. If this hadn't passed my children would be taught in school that anyone could marry- regardless of sex. The No on 8 campaign claimed this was a lie. Immediately after Prop 8 passed, a close friend of mine and teacher had her little girl (6) come home from kindergarten at a different school with a paper about counting and numbers. The worksheet had different families to count. Two of the pictures had families with 2 men. She immediately called the teacher who claimed that she hadn't looked at it that closely and was sorry. So though they claimed they wouldn't teach children about it in school it doesn't have to be directly teaching.
The day before the election the No on 8 campaign ran this commercial.

Can you believe that???!! What if this had been put out against the Jews, or the Catholics or ANY other group than the Mormons? There would have been a public outcry. But no, the Mormons are easy targets because we don't fight back and we are used to it, right?
Anyway, voting day and the time after waiting to see if it had passed or not was really stressful. It passed 52% to 48%. I was so relieved. All the hard work was worth it.
Though many religious groups were involved in the passing of 8, as I predicted, the Mormons were targeted as bigots and haters, the exact things that spurred on the vicious attacks from those opposing Proposition 8. To see a video of the protest at the LDS temple in LA, go here(it gets more interesting after 5 minutes):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxagcNFyHyc
There were also protests at the Salt Lake, Long Beach, New York, and other temples. It was really hateful. They wrote on our temples. They jumped on cars and even prevented people from going to or leaving the temple. They held signs calling us names and making fun of things most sacred to our religion.
Like I said, it's hard to understand unless you have lived it. But I have to say that it was one of the coolest experiences I have been through. To face the rest of the world and stand up for what I believe in was a testimony-building experience that I wish everyone had the opportunity to experience. I have heard many people say that different hymns helped them during this time. The one that continually ran through my head and gave me courage was "Who's on the Lord's side, Who?" A song that has always been a little awkward to sing. But seriously, every day, that is how I felt.
Immediately after Prop.8's passing the No on 8 people started appealing to the California Supreme Court to overturn the voice of the people once again. Their argument is that the Proposition was taken to the polls prematurely. Today the Supreme Court heard arguments for both sides of Proposition 8 and they have 90 days to reach a conclusion.
Please, please pray that Proposition 8 will remain part of the California constitution. This affects your life, no matter where you are. If this is overturned here there is a chance the same thing could happen in numerous other states where similar things have passed.
Wow, this was long. Thanks for sticking in there with me and for your support!!

UGH
K, so I watched it.
And all I can say is
WHAT THE FREAK?!
I officially hate ABC, The Bachelor and anyone involved in this show (other than the women).
And what was with Molly? If there was ever a great time to show men that women aren't going to go for that crap, that was it. I would have loved nothing more than to watch her go, "Uhh, sorry but that ship has sailed." And left him sad and all alone...
Well the ride was fun, I guess. I'm done griping now.
WHAT DID YOU THINK? (please keep profanities and name-calling to a minimum)

Don't say a WORD!
I haven't watched it yet. I won't get to it until tomorrow so don't tell me who he picks and all accompanies it.
I'll watch it tomorrow and then we'll talk.
Hay
